How can I prevent Cervical Cancer? There are several ways in which you can prevent Cervical cancer. Have Screening Tests : To find conditions that may lead to cancers and can find pre-cancers before they can turn into invasive cancer. The Pap test (or Pap smear) and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test are the most commonly used screening tests. If a pre-cancer is found it can be treated before it transforms into cervical cancer. Get an HPV vaccine : It protects young people (ages 11 or 12 years) against infection with the HPV subtypes most commonly linked to cancer, as well as some types that can cause anal and genital warts. It should be given before a person becomes exposed to HPV (such as through sexual activity). If not vaccinated already, everyone can get the vaccine through age 26 years.
